Describe to us who Ring Tu is?
My name is Ring Tu. Currently, I work as a Sustainability Project Manager with Deloitte, where I provide advisory and other services to numerous companies across different industries in Hong Kong, including organisations from the public sector and various government agencies.
Why did you decide to join GREEN Hospitality’s Advisory Council?
I personally love travelling and good food, and Hong Kong’s hospitality industry is such a significant sector. But I noticed within this industry, there were not a lot of great initiatives and organisations focusing on how to improve the hospitality industry’s sustainable performance. When I got to learn about GREEN Hospitality, I wanted to become involved in its work.
How has your career journey led you to focus on sustainability?
For almost two decades, I have been driven to create positive social impact. It started when I was in school and was searching for ways to help students or kids in underdeveloped regions.
Before joining Deloitte, to focus full-time on sustainability, I worked in capital markets for six years, which involved consulting work and private equity investment work. At the time, especially pre-COVID, Hong Kong and Asia experienced rapid growth, where we had harvested a lot of achievements and economic development in a very short amount of time. That resulted in considerable resource consumption, and I soon realised that doing things the sustainable way will become the only way for businesses in this region. That's primarily why I started to look into and focus on sustainability.
What are your aspirations for the tourism and hospitality industries in Asia, and how do you think GREEN Hospitality fits within them?
Tourism and hospitality are industries that have a significant impact on people's jobs and their lives, in Hong Kong, Asia, and elsewhere in the world. How we transform this industry to be more sustainable, to build that sustainable ecosystem, and embed the concept and practices for a circular economy will be important.
GREEN Hospitality has been doing a fantastic job being that super connector and platform, to not only connect people to do something great and sustainable together, but also provide a lot of practical solutions and services to companies in the industry. I think that's really remarkable.
What is your take on the growth of ESG initiatives?
Many companies beyond the hospitality industry are pushed to get onto this journey to be more sustainable, mainly because of regulations and expectations of investors and consumers. However, at the same time, we are seeing this trend of compliance-driven sustainability efforts becoming one that is driven more by value creation. I think that will be something that a lot of companies should think about, such as how to embed sustainable strategies, initiatives, and practices into their day-to-day operation, and maybe change their business model to create real sustainable impact and financial benefits as well to their stakeholders.
