In addition to the Food Waste Innovation Showcase in the foyer area, participants of the event were also invited to join the Innovative Presentation by eight student teams of their innovative business ideas or commercially viable products made from food waste.
The panel of judges included: Dr. Kelvin Cheng, Director - Landfills, Transfer Stations and Collection Business Line, Veolia Hong Kong; Raymond Chu, Associate Director of University Collaborations at HKSTP; Anita Cheng, Executive Committee, Hong Kong Chefs Association; Daniel Guevara, Executive Chef of The Ritz-Calrton, Hong Kong; Dr. Jetty Lee, Associate Professor (Teaching) at the HKU School of Biological Science; and Lucia Loposova, Executive Director of GREEN Hospitality.
The winning team, Upcycleista, impressed the judges with its “Pupcycle Toothpaste”, an edible, preservative-free toothpaste for dogs. Said Chan Nok Yi and Ho Ka Wing, the members of Upcycleista: “We found the brainstorming process very beneficial to ideating the final output, as that has enabled us as a team to understand more about reusing food waste creatively.”
Said Lucia Loposova: “At GREEN Hospitality, we have long been committed to facilitating broad cross-sector collaboration between the hospitality and F&B sectors, innovators and entrepreneurs, academia and youth, civil society and the Hong Kong government to accelerate sustainability actions. As the Municipal Solid Waste Charging and Disposable Plastic Tableware ban are expected to come into effect soon, we are delighted to see that innovative solutions abound in this city, and we look forward to more strategic partnerships with different parties to turn the hospitality industry into a catalyst for sustainable development.”
